WHAT IS FLY?

FLY MOVEMENT is a form of aerial movement practice which utilises the silk hammock and lyra (aerial hoop). The basic foundation of the movement derives primarily from Body Fly Academy by Sana Motion, which combines practices from dance, yoga and pilates.

With a strong emphasis on correct alignment and technique, FLY allows you to gain flexibility and build core strength while remaining mindful of the inner workings of the body. We believe that the human body should be respected and continuous movement practice is just one way of ensuring we live a healthy and dynamic life.

WHERE IT ALL STARTED

Sprouting from a background and passion in classical and contemporary dance, Charlotte found aerial arts to be an extension of that very practice. There is much power in movement, and the ability to take movement to greater heights (literally!) is pretty spectacular and unlike any other.

With a classical ballet training background of 14 years and a 2-year stint in professional contemporary dance training and performance, foundational dance techniques have carried over into FLY movement giving room for a high level of body awareness and mindfulness in FLY classes.

HOW LONG IS A FLY CLASS?

Each class lasts for 1 hour. We recommend for you to arrive at least 10 minutes before class time to get settled in.

yoga-human-png- (1).png

DO I NEED TO BE FLEXIBLE TO FLY?

The short answer is No :) In fact, FLY is a great exercise class to help you gain flexibility. With the support of the hammock, you will have the ability to hold a pose for longer and move deeper into a stretch.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO CLASS?

Water bottle, face towel and a yoga mat! We do have some yoga mats in the studio should you require one.

yoga-human-png- (1).png

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

We advise you to wear a fitted top with sleeves, leggings or leggings under your shorts. We do not recommend shorts or crop tops especially if you are just starting out as you may end up with fabric burn from the friction of the hammock rubbing against your skin. Please remove any jewellery before class as it may damage the hammock.

You will require a simple hammock set up at home in order to practice FLY. If you are thinking about installing your own hammock at home, we can help! Let us know and we'll walk you through the process from A-Z [i.e selecting the right type of hammock, choosing a suitable spot at home, knotting your hammock and etc.]

WHAT ARE SOME BENEFITS OF FLY?

You will practice body awareness through learning about correct body alignment and technique and with that, build a strong core and upper body strength as you move in and out of the hammock.

I AM NEW TO AERIAL, WHERE DO I START?

If you are an absolute beginner,  you must first complete 1 Introductory FLY Workshop or 1 private class before joining our regular weekly classes.

We value safety and proper movement technique, and would require absolute beginners to learn the foundations of FLY first. You may get in touch with us to book in for a private class slot.

Introductory Fly Workshops are held seasonally.
